NOW PLAYING: TIME SLIP: TOMORROW, NOW, & BACK AGAIN
A brand new experience from OKC’s Factory Obscura pops up this summer

Oklahoma City’s Factory Obscura, best known for their long running MIX-TAPE installation, has debuted their latest collaborative art experience, which is popping up for a limited time this summer.
Factory Obscura, founded in 2017, is part of the same artistic movement focused on large scale interactive installations that birthed Meow Wolf and Otherworld into the world. In the time since its founding, Obscura’s collective of artists has been focused on growing their work in their home city, and TIME SLIP: TOMORROW, NOW, & BACK AGAIN is a glimpse at what a full scale Factory Obscura could look like.
We checked in with Kelsey Karper, Co-Founder & Director of Logistical Creativity at Factory Obscura about the new experience which runs through Sep. 30th.

No Proscenium: Tell us a little bit about your experience! What’s it about? What makes it immersive?
Kelsey Karper: TIME SLIP: TOMORROW, NOW, & BACK AGAIN is a new, temporary immersive experience from Factory Obscura, open through September 30, 2024 in Oklahoma City. You are invited to traverse the labyrinth of Factory Obscura’s past, present, and future, encountering classic creatures and new creations along the way. With over 3,000 square feet of handcrafted art, TIME SLIP is filled with interactive details waiting to be discovered.
A diverse team of 15 artists have been working collaboratively for over 6 months to create TIME SLIP, including painters, sculptors, musicians, poets, tech experts, fabricators, and many other skill sets.

NP: What was the inspiration for your upcoming experience?
KK: Since Factory Obscura was founded in 2017, we’ve had dreams of building something larger than what we currently have with our year-round, permanent experience MIX-TAPE, which is about 6,000 square feet of immersive art. We have room for expansion within the same building that houses MIX-TAPE, and TIME SLIP is a temporary “teaser” of what it would be like to permanently expand into that space. This project gives us an opportunity to experiment with creative concepts, as well as operational logistics, that will inform our future expansion.

Fans who have been following our work since we began will recognize many of the pieces within TIME SLIP. Over the past seven years, we have created a number of temporary experiences, and people have fallen in love with many of the creatures and characters from our past work. TIME SLIP has given us an opportunity to bring some of those pieces back out of storage, and to refresh them to be enjoyed again. So, while TIME SLIP does imagine a future for Factory Obscura, it’s also looking back on where we’ve come from.
NP: What do you think fans of immersive will find most interesting about this latest experience?
KK: Like all Factory Obscura experiences, TIME SLIP was created through a highly collaborative process, with an emphasis on handmade details. This process results in a space that is rich with meaning and emotion, and filled with surprises large and small. TIME SLIP is also in the same building with our permanent experience MIX-TAPE, so this summer is the perfect time to visit while you can do both!

NP: Once you started designing and testing what did you discover about this experience that was unexpected?
KK: When we started the design process for TIME SLIP, we knew we wanted to incorporate pieces from our previous work but didn’t know exactly which pieces they would be. As the ideas started to develop, it was nice to have the opportunity to look back at all the common threads of ideas across the last seven years and pull them all together into one cohesive experience. TIME SLIP feels like the place where all the stories we have been telling are converging.
NP: What can fans who are coming to this, or thinking about coming to this, do to get into the mood of the experience?
KK: Before coming to TIME SLIP, you might want to revisit (or discover for the first time) some of Factory Obscura’s past work, and see if you recognize anything as you explore TIME SLIP. Check out our past projects here.
We are also sharing some behind-the-scenes photos showing how things are made on Instagram.
And as you can imagine, during our design process we referred to so many movies, books, and stories that involve time travel.
