NOW PLAYING: Squirrelor’s Tavern
A fantasy tavern above a taproom in LA makes its last stand this March!

Earlier this year we got a chance to check out the space at Squirrelor’s Tavern, which resides above the First Draft Taproom & Kitchen in DTLA, and what we found was incredibly charming.
The creators of Squirrelor’s Tavern had turned the taproom’s upstairs loft into a tavern straight out of your weekend D&D session, with an attention to detail that bordered on the obsessive.
But a dark shadow has fallen on the Tavern, as First Draft Taproom & Kitchen is set to close at the end of March, which means this incarnation of Squirrelor’s Tavern is not long for the material plane.
We checked in with Squirrelor’s Tavern Event Director Taylor Frost about this last run of events at First Draft.
This is No Proscenium’s NOW PLAYING, a look at ongoing immersive experiences & events. To learn more about how your event could be considered for the feature check out How To Get Covered By NoPro.

NO PROSCENIUM: Tell us a little bit about your experience! What’s it about? What makes it immersive?
Taylor Frost: Squirrelor’s Tavern is a highly immersive medieval tavern, that is an interactive, dinner and drink experience. Each booking is 2–2.5 hour that includes 2 drinks!
Guests will have in-theme interactions with the Squirrelor’s Tavern characters; opportunities to dance, play games, solve puzzles, and find secret messages that piece together a story of intrigue.
Become part of our captivating fantasy realm, choosing your own style of adventure as you experience Squirrelor’s Tavern.

NP: What was the inspiration for your upcoming experience?
TF: The direct inspiration is that in 2018, Squirrelor (Carlos Leon), made a small modest medieval tavern in his bedroom for him, his roommates(me!), and our friends to enjoy. The second version was built in the next house we lived in, and we made it bigger and better.

This version of the Tavern is the 3rd iteration, and with this version we wanted to be able to share the magic of our Tavern with all of you!

NP: What do you think fans of immersive will find most interesting about this latest experience?
TF: I particularly enjoy that there is something for everyone at Squirrelor’s Tavern. If you enjoy puzzles, we have those available. If you enjoy performances, we have very talented and charismatic cast members. If you really enjoy set design, and being immersed in a space, we like to think our space is truly special.
There’s a little something for all immersive lovers, and all of it is designed to make you feel like you’ve stepped into another world.

NP: Once you started designing and testing what did you discover about this experience that was unexpected?
TF: I was surprised at how many people really enjoy the story and puzzles we have put together. I kind of expected less than half of the patrons to try and do the puzzles, but I would say most people do at least half of them. It’s been awesome to see people enjoying the hard work we put into it.

NP: What can fans who are coming to this, or thinking about coming to this, do to get into the mood of the experience?
TF: What a great question! My biggest suggestion would be to dress up! Even if you don’t have an elaborate costume, dressing up in something simple, like a pirate costume, will go a long way to getting yourself in the mood to play pretend like you’re in another world, drinking in a Tavern with your friends.
