NOW FUNDING: Limbo! The Best Damned Tiki Bar in Hell

Spectacular Disaster Factory, the company behind some of our favorite “larp-lite” experiences in the Southland are coming back around to drag us to Hell this September.
The one-night only Limbo! The Best Damned Tiki Bar in Hell is slated for the Roguelike Tavern in Burbank. Here’s what the show is all about:
The Limbo Lounge is the most happening bar in all of Hell, where Angels, Demons, and deceased Mortals (all played by YOU, the participants) mingle around tropical cocktails, karaoke, and Eternal power-plays. The balance shifts constantly as Hell applies cutting-edge corporate theory… but the God-Father and his Heavenly Host of Wise Guys have plenty of schemes and the muscle to back them up. And the Mortals trapped in between — who generate the “Soul” the whole Afterlife runs on — have an agenda of their own!
You choose which side you are on — we will help you design a character to play, or write one for you, if you like! — and you can participate in Big Plots as much or as little as you like. Dressing up — as Angel, Demon, or stylish Mortal — is strongly encouraged.
To give themselves a stable base to work from, Spectacular Disaster has turned to crowdfunding, and have already raised $661 dollars of a modest $950 goal to bring the event to life.
We checked in with creators Aaron Vanek & Kirsten Hageleit of Spectacular Disaster Factory about the campaign for the larp which runs through August 20, 2024.

NO PROSCENIUM: Tell us a little bit about this planned experience. What’s it about? What makes it immersive?
Aaron Vanek & Kirsten Hageleit: Limbo! is a live-action roleplaying experience where all participants are active elements in the fiction, playing Angels, Demons, or Mortals, all trying to get by in an Afterlife where Hell has gone corporate and Heaven is run by the mob. Every participant gets a character to play, with knowledge, power, or skills to — hopefully! — achieve their goals. (Or make up new ones — this is freeform play, and the outcomes are up to you!)
NP: What is the inspiration for your upcoming experience?
AV & KH: This larp was first designed back in 2005, and was directly inspired by the art of Shag and the song “Jazz Devil” by Barry Adamson. The idea of an afterlife full of tropical drinks, immortal secret agents, and karaoke (a lot of karaoke) was too hilarious to pass up. This will be the seventh run, so it hasn’t gotten any less funny in the meantime.
NP: What do you think fans of immersive will find most interesting about this upcoming experience?
AV & KH: Limbo! is an experience that goes beyond immersion and interaction into full participation — there is no script, there is no planned outcome, what happens during the evening is up to the participants themselves. If you ever wanted to be a secret agent, or a famous performer, or even work out some of your job frustrations in an environment free of real-world consequences, Limbo! is the experience for you!
NP: Have you crowdfunded before? If so, is there anything different about your experience (or expectations) this time?
AV & KH: Yes, we’ve successfully funded before, mainly for the H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival®-San Pedro. This is the first time we’ve used crowdfunding for an interactive/immersive show, which we decided to do to ensure enough attendance before committing to running it.
