COMING SOON: LIMOS

The surprise Spooky Season treat returns to LA in April as we get Halfway to Halloween

Last Spooky Season we were given a nice little surprise here at NoPro when one of our NYC correspondents popped in with a review of a small experience in LA that was otherwise going to slip through our radar: Limos.

The report we got painted a picture of a show right up our alley: a tarot reading gone wrong that plunges the audience into a mythic tale. We were all too ready to sign up and it was all too wrapped, as is the fate of many a Spooky Season show.

But you can’t keep a good haunter down, and director Jackson Mancuso is reviving Limos at DTLA’s The Count’s Den on Earth Day weekend this month. (That’s April 18–20, for those of you who don’t track Earth Day.)

We caught up with the director through the supernatural medium otherwise known as email, to bring you the basics on what is now a highly anticipated show around these parts.

This is No Proscenium’s COMING SOON, a look at ongoing immersive experiences & events. To learn more about how your event could be considered for the feature check out How To Get Covered By NoPro.

NO PROSCENIUM: Tell us a little bit about your experience! What’s it about? What makes it immersive?

Jackson Mancuso: Limos is an intimate tarot card reading full of suspense and spectacle. It’s a fortune telling gone wrong, weaving elements of Greek mythology and immersive horror to tell a tale of greed and destruction for those brave enough to hear it. This show packs the best practices of immersive entertainment into a tiny room for you and your loved ones, crafting a highly-distilled experience about the mysteries of mankind!

NP: What was the inspiration for your upcoming experience?

JM: This is our first time stepping out and creating something on our own from our day jobs working as theme park designers. Using everything we’ve learned professionally and as fans, we threw in all the tips and tricks we know to create both unique individual moments and a compelling overall experience for audience members. We were really inspired by the 1:1 experiences popularized by Punchdrunk and were interested on how to expand that over a longer period of time. It’s also very connected to our love for horror and how horror can be used as a great driver of themes and metaphors.

NP: What do you think fans of immersive will find most interesting about this latest experience?

JM: This really is our love letter to immersive entertainment. It was important that it reflects everything we enjoy about immersive experiences: the intimacy, the set dressing, the ability to story tell on a deeper level, and of course — horror! What sets Limos apart is the themes of the work and Earth Day in particular provided us an exciting opportunity to dive further into those ideas.

NP: Once you started designing and testing what did you discover about this experience that was unexpected?

JM: We originally ran the show last year out of my mom’s garage. For me it was just an excuse to finally scratch that itch and do something on my own. There was never the intent to bring the show back, but unexpectedly, the reception and turnout was overwhelmingly positive which inspired us to keep going. This is a step up from our first production, our first time selling tickets thanks to our partners at the Immersive Arts Collective (IAC), and we are beyond excited for people to come out and see the show!

NP: What can fans who are coming to this, or thinking about coming to this, do to get into the mood of the experience?

JM: Come as you are! We wanted to create something with a low barrier of entry that is easily accessible for all audience members. We find that the experience is better if people come with their partners or close friends but a solo experience is also welcomed. Each ticket buys out an entire time slot so the type of experience you want is entirely up to you!
