Seattle’s Spooky Season gets a new treat from immersive mainstays Nordo

With over 30 original productions at their Pioneer Square location, Nordo is on the path to its next big adventure: a large-scale immersive facility for Seattle.
On the way they are continuing to experiment with interactivity and immersion, with their latest experiment popping up just in time for Seattle’s Spooky Season at the Georgetown Steam Plant.

NO PROSCENIUM: Tell us a little bit about your experience! What’s it about? What makes it immersive?
Erin Brindley: Experience the ultimate supernatural adventure with Seattle’s premiere creators of immersive experiences. Ghosts of Nebula is a guided tour through Seattle’s historic Georgetown Steam Plant, featuring ghostly encounters, occult secrets, and shifting timelines. Six souls vanished in 1921 and they need you to uncover their sinister fate — but there are more powers at work than steam here!
NP: What was the inspiration for your upcoming experience?
EB: Ghosts of Nebula is the second piece in our ongoing Nebula narrative, and the story itself evolved once we discovered the venue. We knew our dream scientists were coming to Seattle to investigate unusual energy readings in the area, and we knew a portal was opening. What we didn’t realize until we saw the Georgetown Steam Plant was that,103 years ago, a group of supernatural explorers had also attempted to open a portal there. That revelation helped us put all the pieces together. Creatively, we’ve been striving to recreate the intense, real-time climax of the horror genre, much like the original Alien.

NP: What do you think fans of immersive will find most interesting about this latest experience?
EB: The story unfolds around the audience, presenting an alternate history of a real historical site. It begins even before you arrive, if you elect to participate in our dream experiment online (through the dreamtech app). Once there, our guides introduce the story and explain the goals of the evening, before you cross the veil into the world of 1921. As an audience member, you are implicated in the story — it is your presence and your investigation of the matter at hand that shape the events that follow.

NP: Once you started designing and testing what did you discover about this experience that was unexpected?
While we knew to expect surprises in an improvised, immersive show, we were still taken aback by just how far the journey could go. Immersive storytelling naturally evolves, but the way our writers continually expanded the world into unexpected new corners was remarkable. Each detail seemed to open up endless possibilities, as if every question about the world could spawn an entirely new show. Our designers, too, breathed life into these concepts, turning abstract ideas into tangible spaces. And the performers didn’t just act — they activated the world. The layers that emerged between these creative forces surprised us all and took the experience beyond what we initially envisioned.
NP: What can fans who are coming to this, or thinking about coming to this, do to get into the mood of the experience?
EB: To fully immerse yourself in the world of Ghosts of Nebula, we suggest setting the mood with 1920s music, letting tinkle down an empty hallway. For a more cinematic approach, rewatch Alien while imagining Indiana Jones. If you’re in the mood for some reading, dive into Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer.
