Within’s VR fitness service says YES to a big community request

Supernatural Has A New Plan, A Family Plan (Newswire)

Since launching in late April of this year, Supernatural, the VR fitness subscription service from Within that features the extensive music catalogs of Universal Music, Warner Brothers and others has been in a constant state of evolution.

Pitched initially as a kind of “Peloton meets Beat Saber,” Supernatural has grown into more of the former in the intervening while keeping the roots of the later. While the heart of the service is still about delivering fresh multi-track workouts daily, the offerings have expanded to include meditation sessions and short two-song workouts for those looking to put a little extra work in. All included in the monthly subscription price.

Today the team announced the arrival of a much asked for feature: family plans.

Until this update each Supernatural subscription was designed to support one user on one headset, but the service will now allow for up to three other user profiles on a single headset at no additional cost. With subscriptions running $19/month ($179/year) that breaks down to as little as $4.75 monthly per person. If, you know, you live with other people and they don’t stiff you on their dues.

The subscription is still tied to a given headset, however, so if you live in a household with multiple virtual reality headsets and you want them to each have Supernatural you’re going to pay up. (Might we just suggest, if you are so lucky, dedicating one headset to Supernatural and letting it be the one that gets all sweaty?)

In any event, this move is a big step towards broadening the user base of the service, which has been continually evolving. Along with the meditations and quick playlists, the Within team has been doing substantial work under the hood by altering their “target travel system,” in order “to give members a cleaner perspective of the movement patterns” by “incorporat[ing] more realistic physics in [the target’s] movements,” and adding “haptic tails” which create vibration patterns that can be felt in the touch controllers “ with the goal of helping members feel more connected to the music as they move in their workouts.”

Look for an update to our ongoing team review of Supernatural soon.

Correction: a previous version of the article did not include the fact that Supernatural has access to the Warner Brothers and other music catalogs beyond Universal’s. The article has been updated.
