ANNOUNCING THE BRILLIANT TEXAS ARTISTS CREATING MEOW WOLF’S 5TH EXHIBITION IN HOUSTON’S FIFTH WARD
Santa Fe, NM (February 15, 2024) — Meow Wolf, the visionary art collective turned pioneers in the experiential art world, are proud to unveil some of the creative minds behind their fifth permanent installation in Houston’s historic 5th Ward. In collaboration with Meow Wolf’s in-house artist team, a diverse ensemble of over 40 contributing artists from Texas will create what promises to be an electrifying addition to the city’s vibrant cultural landscape, each grounding their unique talents in the intergalactic mosaic that is a Meow Wolf exhibition.
“The brilliance and vision of these artists echo the heartbeat of Houston. Collectively, this exhibition will be a reflection of Houston culture as much as the fantastical realms of Meow Wolf that fans expect,” said GONZO247, Meow Wolf’s Houston Artist Liaison and a life-long Houston artist.
To build their all-star list of Houston talent, Meow Wolf’s Senior Director of Artist Collaboration, Han Santana-Sayles, invited local curators and nonprofits to build artist lists for the exhibition.
“I want each Meow Wolf exhibition to be a reflection of relevant contemporary artists in that region,” said Santana-Sayles. “In order to find the best creatives to work with, we love consulting with local curators or nonprofits who support emerging artists to build artist lists with us.”
Curatorial contributors to the Houston exhibition were Harrison Guy, Director of Arts and Culture at the DeLUXE Theater; Christine West, an art administrator and curator with 20 years of experience focusing on public art access in Houston; Y.E.Torres, an interdisciplinary artist and the Public Programs and CAMHLAB Manager at Contemporary Art Museum Houston; and ‘Fresh Arts,’ a Houston-focused nonprofit that empowers local artists and public arts initiatives.
Last May, Meow Wolf broke ground on the future exhibition site with a ceremony that certainly embodied the phrase “groundbreaking.” Mayor Sylvester Turner, Meow Wolf CEO Jose Tolosa, DealCo’s Jon Deal, and Meow Wolf artist liaison GONZO247 christened it in contemporary style: with spray paint on the wall. While the name, theme, and opening date of the exhibition are yet to be revealed, Meow Wolf is thrilled to announce the collaborating artists who embody Houston culture.
Artists range from the prominent international art activist, Kill Joy, to a pillar in the historic 5th Ward and larger Houston community, El Franco Lee II, to one of the few female puppeteers in the theater world in Houston, Afsaneh Aayani, to the artist whose intricate narrative world weaves together comic book elements, classical mythology, and multimedia installations, Trenton Doyle Hancock.
