The Rogue Lab is an incubator for new work that stretches the boundary of what is currently being done onstage, including immersive experiences, interactive design, puppet plays and genre-bending pieces that fit within the Rogues’ Hyper-theater aesthetic.

After two years of shepherding the creation and presentation of 12 new hyper-theatrical plays in the Lab and Reading series, Rogue is opening submissions for a new class of directors who dream of building theatrical work that stretches the boundary of what is currently being done onstage. Applications are open now through May 1, 2022.

In 2022, Rogue Lab is shifting its focus from playwrights to create a space for LA-based theatrical directors to expand their skills and network. A cohort of directors will meet 10 times over the course of 6 months; during that time, they will each work on an idea for a production they are dreaming about, planning or would like to do — this could be a new play or a bold reimagining of an existing piece. Meetings will consist of group discussion and feedback, guest lectures by artists working in hyper-theatrical, immersive and design-forward work, and process sharing.

During the 6-month lab, directors will be paired with a designer to experiment in possibilities for bringing their vision to life. The lab will culminate in a public presentation of the proposed project — this can be a talk and design share, a performance of a few select scenes, or a conversation of the director’s choosing.

The goal of this lab is to nourish LA’s community of bold and imaginative directors and to share tools that are useful for production. Directors will also be able to walk away from the lab with a fully fleshed out pitch for the play.

A panel of industry judges will select the winner of this year’s competition. The 2019 edition of the event led to the creation of multiple pieces that went on to be booked at other festivals and have runs of their own. A fun community event from After Hours Theatre Company with the support of The Immersive Experience Institute and No Proscenium. Selected teams will receive a meal stipend for the weekend, have access to props/costumes on-site, and retain full rights over developed material.
